Sapeurs

I stumbled across this photo of a man in a pink suit with red accessories on http://www.africandaydreams.com/index.html and was immediately captivated.  He is a "sapeur" from the Congo, a man who used fashion as a form of civil disobedience during the authoritarian regime of Mobutu Sese Seko.  Researching these men and gazing at their wild outfits reminded me not only of the importance of freedom of expression, but of fashion and individual style as well.

Daniele Tamagni photographed many of these men and you can buy the book on amazon.
